RURAL PROJECTS
SUSSEX AND KENT

St John’s Farm, West Sussex

The proposed scheme provides a total of 4 new detached barns on an existing brownfield site.
The buildings have been carefully position to utilise the footprints of the existing barns, whilst improving the relationship of the new buildings with the existing ‘Sussex’ Barn and Ancient Woodland.
The design draws on the rural vernacular architecture by creating a centralised ‘barnyard’ setting to reflect the rural character of the area.
This also creates a sense of arrival and ownership which reinforces community spirit, whilst employing Secure by Design principles.
Proposed routes follow natural desire lines through the site, and the buildings have been arranged to encompass and envelope the central communal & private entrance spaces.
The edges of the proposed scheme weave naturally into the Ancient Woodland with the introduction of garden & soft landscaping, particularly where the proposed buildings have been moved further from the edges of the Ancient Woodland to alleviate the juxtapoisition.
This is aimed to improve the current relationship of the site to the surrounding woodland and surrounding edges.
